MUSCAT BAILEY-A

Muscat Bailey-A is a deep pink skinned wine grape that was developed in Japan in the 1920s by Kawakami Zenbei at the Iwanohara Winery in Niigata Prefecture. His objective was to develop a wine grape that could adapt to Japan’s climate. He mixed the Bailey grape with the Muscat Hamburg grape and created a wine grape that is used in Japan for making light red fruity wines. Recently drier varieties and barrel aged varieties have also been developed. The grape has been blended with western grapes creating a full bodied, Bordeaux style flavours and smoother Bourgogne/Burgundy blends. (2019 information)
